Somewhat of a pioneering title as of its release, Star Ocean is a blend of role-playing storytelling in both outer space and medieval realms. Each game in the series is set in the same universe, and each story, though featuring largely original characters comparative to other instalments, typically has an affect on the universe as a whole. Expect to see plenty of swords, magic, space ships, interstellar wars, and anime characters with huge eyes.

Although Star Ocean is listed as a game-only franchise, Star Ocean: The Second Story received a manga and an animated adaptation, the latter of which was called Star Ocean EX. Neither the manga nor the anime were ever completed, and the story was only resolved in a series of drama CDs exclusive to Japan. If you want the true, complete experience of Star Ocean: The Second Story, you'll need to stick to the games.
