Resident Evil owned and published by Capcom Co., Ltd.

One of the most prominent gaming horror franchises ever created, Resident Evil is a story of monsters, evil corporations, and protagonists who are far more capable than they should be. Much of the plot focuses on the Umbrella Corporation, an unethical pharmaceuticals company responsible for the creation of a line of bio-weapons that run rampant in the community of Raccoon City.

Zombies. Lots of zombies.

There are numerous remakes and rehashes of events in the earlier Resident Evil games. For the greatest amount of plot detail it's recommended to play the versions that are not based around light gun game play, ie The Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles, where possible.

A few of the games, notably those featuring predominantly multiplayer and / or arena-based combat, are non-canonical or not important to the overall storyline. Despite boasting a storyline, Resident Evil Gaiden is also not considered canonical. All non-canonical games are included under Release Order only.

Animated films that are pertinent to the games are included in the chronological listing. None of the live action movies are included, however, as they exist independently of the Resident Evil games. The live-action television series Resident Evil draws heavily on the lore of the games, but is still considered separate from the game continuity, so it, too, is not included. All live action iterations of Resident Evil are included at the bottom of the article.
