Gotta catch 'em all? Gotta catch 'em all. Originally a quirky game about capturing and training monsters, Pokémon has since grown into a worldwide phenomenon, encompassing dozens of games and becoming one of Nintendo's staple brands. Each game is different, but the main line of titles put the player in control of a rookie Pokémon trainer, with the job of becoming the champion of your home region. Along the way you'll face fellow trainers, gym leaders, wild Pokémon, and villainous criminals with misguided - yet often benevolent - goals.

The Pokémon line also includes a tie-in animated show and a series of movies. These are not included in this list, as these stories are heavily implied to be an alternate telling of the events of the games.

Because the Pokémon games are by and large meant to be self-contained stories, it is difficult to establish continuity between many of the franchise's titles. Thanks to this tweet, however, it is now somewhat possible to establish a line of continuity between the games. There are still a few problematic titles, and they will be noted below.

Any games that do not fit into the timeline, such as it is, are noted under Release Order only.
