Metroid owned and published by Nintendo.
A pioneer in gaming females who don't take crap from anyone, Samus Aran is the galaxy's greatest bounty hunter - yet the only bounties she seems to take on involve Metroids, energy-sucking creatures that threaten the galaxy. It's Samus' job to protect a multitude of worlds from the Metroids, as well as the Space Pirates who would exploit the Metroids' incredible power.
There is only one Metroid title, Metroid Pinball, which is considered non-canonical. It essentially retells the plot of Metroid Prime in pinball form. You can play it and still get the major beats of Metroid Prime, but... you should probably play the original game if you're in it for the story.
Metroid's small media empire includes a number of manga. The majority of the material is either jokey (and likely non-canonical) or altered retellings of the games. The one exception is Metroid, a sixteen-chapter manga from Magazine Z. The Metroid manga covers the events of Samus's childhood, before the original game. The manga contradicts the games in a few ways, harming its status as a canonical story, but since there is no other depiction of Samus's life before Metroid the manga is likely worth reading if you want a fuller picture of her pre-bounty hunter days. All manga is included under Release Order.
