Perhaps the most ironically-named franchise in gaming history, Final Fantasy is a massive undertaking of storytelling and turn-based combat. Tied together by common story elements and a few recurring worlds, the Final Fantasy gaming mythology is among the most expansive - and complicated - chronologies to chart.

The majority of Final Fantasy titles exist within contained universes, with no chronological connections. Consequently, only a few Final Fantasy titles appear under In-Universe Chronological Order. Any Final Fantasy chronologies with only a single game are listed under Release Order.

Movies, short films, and novels are included where appropriate.

In-Universe Chronological Order

Final Fantasy IV
Compilation of Final Fantasy VII

The Final Fantasy VII chronology has been complicated by the creation of Final Fantasy VII Remake and its upcoming sequels. There are strong implications in the first game that Remake is a sequel to the original timeline, and not just a straight do-over. At this point the Remake universe of games will be placed after the original timeline, and once the chronology gets cleared up the two lists can be merged.
Final Fantasy X

There are apparently plans to pick up Final Fantasy X's story in the future. As such it's possible that the events of the two novels may be retconned.
Ivalice Alliance

The Ivalice games are set in the same universe, but usually focus on different characters contained in a murky timeline. As such this chronology is, at best, an approximation.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

The placement of these titles is based on some fairly subtle indicators in the games. Refer to this thread for a rationale on the timeline.
Dissidia

Dissidia is a sticky section of Final Fantasy lore to place, as it incorporates multiple universes into a single, non-canonical brawl. That said, there are indications in the lore that it ties more strongly into the original Final Fantasy than any of the other games, notably the inclusion of Cid of the Lufaine.
Fabula Nova Crystallis

Originally the Fabula Nova Crystallis series was supposed to feature two other games, Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. These two games have since been removed from the shared timeline with the Final Fantasy XIII series, however, owing to delays and retooling.
Release Order

This list does not contain games from offshoot series, such as Kingdom Hearts or the Mana series, which feature elements of the Final Fantasy universe. This includes the Final Fantasy Adventure and Legend titles, which later became the Mana and SaGa games, respectively.
